Celebration is a ritual of mediation that I practice on the third week of every month. Responding to my own tendency toward cynicism, this undertaking is not just about searching for things to praise in life, but about realizing the possibility for joy in what is already in front of us. Topics are decided on, images are made, and journal entries are written on each day during this week.
When we seek advice from others, it is in the hope that they have a perspective that we don’t, and it is in good faith that we won’t be greeted by judgement or ridicule. Good counsel promises a strong sense of dignity and loving guidance. For the counselor, this should be a call of duty, as an honest request for wisdom is admirable. Counsel should be recognized as a generous, humbling and necessary human exchange.
In the ongoing experiment to manipulate our surroundings, we find ourselves in collaboration with our ancestors and descendants as much as our peers. Technology is the great human project, exploring with its many branches how far we can push our capacity for ingenuity. Through this project, we have finally inherited our own manufactured plane of spacetime, and though more generally referred to as a communication tool, we can’t deny that the internet has disrupted our reality monumentally.
The pattern of progress and journey, providing a framework that both guides us through our days and encourages us to play along. Mastering our own rhythm, we can engage with our environment in harmony (matching the pace of the people and things around us), or in opposition (rejecting the current flow of things to create change). In either case, things tend to follow a rhythm once it has started, and watching rhythm in satisfied anticipation is a beautiful mode of experience.
Limitations are absolutely suffocating if we treat them as the one defining characteristic of our capabilities. In truth, limitations are exactly what allow a person to flourish. Everyone is given a geographical, physical, mental or emotional range to work in, and it is the task of our creativity to uncover the possibilities within these ranges. Constraints are the boundaries within which we experiment and define, ultimately discovering our resilience and capacity for artistry in our own skill set.
Earth’s ode to expanse, depth and mystery. Vast and isolating, the ocean can be many things at once. It is a human ritual to stand and stare out onto its surface in attempt to take in that enormous beauty. Maybe this is so we can use the strength of that beauty to open doors of reflection. The ocean holds so many of humanity’s projections of hope, fear and ideals. An immense force, an entire world within our own, reflecting back to us whatever it is we need to see.
Feelings of hopelessness can be debilitating, but it is a faith in our own human faculties that allows options to emerge. Embracing variability, nuance and chance are key to being resourceful, as nothing would appear viable without an understanding of these things. This is a useful tool, and maybe even a maximization of our capabilities. Turning over every stone, using broader thinking to stretch resources more precisely—this is what ensures a smartly and fully-lived life.
Our minds give us the unique ability to relive the past, focus in on the present, and imagine the future, truly making time an interactive concept. When we use this ability to reach some sense of enlightenment, we are contemplating—holding one thing in our mind, playing an event back or imagining an outcome. Yet there is a spiritual feeling to contemplation, and whether or not we are receiving a direct experience of the divine, maybe this sense of positive feedback is enough for us to engage with reality on more planes of understanding.
